I Postgraduate Seminar on American Studies
New Methods for the Study of Art and Culture in Contemporary America
The 1st Postgraduate Seminar on American Studies of the Instituto Franklin (Universidad de Alcalá) focuses on presenting and applying diverse methodological approaches to the study of contemporary cultural and artistic manifestations in the US.
Instituto Franklin-UAH in collaboration with the Fulbright Commission in Spain will host an online seminar led by Prof. Barbara Cruz, foremost scholar in the field of American Studies at University of South Florida, and the expert in American literature, Professor Francisco Sáez de Adana Herrero, expert in the narrative genre of the graphic novel and comics (UAH).
This seminar consists of two workshops designed to encourage the involvement of students. Among the topics to be addressed are the following: politics and literature, socially conscious art, museums and society, high and popular culture, and critical visual analysis. All participants, both postgraduate students and professors, will have some minutes after their presentations to engage in intellectual conversation and exchange ideas.
The objectives pursued with this postgraduate seminar are:
- To strengthen the scientific community around American Studies.
- To introduce and apply new methodologies in this study field.
- To introduce updated scholarship and primary sources in this field.
- To explore new paths towards engaging in further research or doctoral theses.
This seminar is addressed to:
- PhD students in the Humanities
- Master’s students in the American Studies program and other Humanities programs
- Researchers interested in current trends and methodologies in the field of North American Studies
