6th Seminar on American Studies
“Some Reflections on the Writing Process of a Doctoral Dissertation”
The 6th Doctoral Seminar on American Studies of the Instituto Franklin (Universidad de Alcalá) focuses on how to manage various issues and experiences that may arise during the process of writing the doctoral dissertation.
This seminar offers two practical workshops, a talk by a recently graduated doctor and the presentations of two recipients of Benjamin Franklin Scholarships for research in the United States. From designing an effective thesis defence (PhD. Carmen Flys), to suggesting some creative strategies to deal with the feared writer’s block (Marjorie Kanter, writer), each seminar activity has been designed to foster a fruitful exchange among faculty and PhD students of the American Studies Doctoral Program. As usual in this event, a working lunch will be offered to encourage intellectual conversation about the students’ research projects among participants.

- To strengthen the scientific community around American Studies.
- To delve into the different lines of research developed in this study field.
- To analyze new trends in American Studies and apply them to the doctoral dissertations in progress.
- To familiarize students with different research methodologies.
This seminar is addressed to:
- PhD students and their thesis directors in the American Studies PhD program.
- Master´s students in the American Studies program.
- All those researchers interested in current trends within the field of North American Studies.

PhD in American Studies at Instituto Franklin-UAH. Degree in Journalism from the CEU-Cardenal Herrera University in Madrid and a Masters in Screenwriting for Television and Film from the Menendez Pelayo International University.
She has worked for Radio Televisión Española, Radio Televisión Valenciana and the Spanish news agency EFE, all official institutions, as well as in the Communications office of the President of the Valencia Regional Government. She has worked as a counselor in different political communication projects and startups. Lecturer and trainer, she is specialized in online communication strategies and nre Internet formats. She currently teaches Theory of Communication at the School of Communication of the CEU-Cardenal Herrera University.
Author of short literary pieces, public art installations, net projects, creative interventions, and essays; researcher and teacher/trainer/workshop leader in the areas of creativity, writing, intercultural matters, communicative competence in English, language development and phonology, problem solving and thinking skills, Paul Bowles… Process oriented teaching: interactive, dialogues, presentations, reading and understanding the short story…
My work has both autobiographical and socio-cultural aspects. What I select to write about and what is left out is of elemental importance. Often a very small insignificant event is presented for reflection on larger themes.
