Title: How Bilinguism Sculpt the Brain?

Born in 1970, he received my PhD in psychology in 1997 (Universitat de Barcelona). In 1998, I started my post-doctoral career at the Brain and Cognitive Sciences department at MIT, thanks to the funding from the Catalan Government. From 1999 to 2000, I was a post-doctoral fellow at the Cognitive Neuropsychology laboratory at Harvard University with a Fulbright scholarship. In 2001, I moved to the Cognitive Neuroscience department at the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste. From 2002 to 2005 I was a Ramón y Cajal research fellow at the UB, and in 2006 I became an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology of the same university. Since 2008 I am ICREA Research Professor, and currently a member of the Center for Brain and Cognition at Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Title: The Success and the Challenges of the Finnish Educational System with Reference to the Spanish Educational System.

Irina Kangasharju has completed her Master´s degree in international education at the University of Oulu and carried out part of her studies and teaching practices in Belgium and in The Netherlands. She is an English teacher and a Class teacher with 12 years of work experience in comprehensive school, both primary and secondary, and at a university of applied sciences in Finland. Currently she works as an ESL teacher in Madrid, Spain.

Title: Preparing English Teachers to Coach their Content Colleagues in Multilingual Classrooms.

Ann Mabbott is the English Language Specialist assigned to Spain this fall through the US Embassy.  She was recently granted the title of Professor Emeritus from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, where she was the director of the Center for Second Language Teaching and Learning.  Most recently, she implemented the English Learner in the Mainstream (ELM) Project in Minnesota, which is funded by the US Department of Education.  Ann Mabbott’s work has focused on the education of language teachers, both language specialists and content teachers who have language learners in their classes. The ELM Project work is twofold: 1. Preparing all pre-service content teachers to meet the linguistic needs of English learners, and 2. Preparing practicing English language specialists to coach their content colleagues in the schools where they teach on how to meet the linguistic and cultural needs of the English learners in their classes.

Title: Building Pathways to Biliteracy: Diversity, Equity and Excellence.

David Nieto is an Assistant Research Professor and Executive Director of the Bueno Center for Multicultural Education in the School of Education at the University of Colorado-Boulder. In his role at BUENO, David leads the strategic impetus, determines the research agenda, and directs all activities to fulfill the mission and vision of the Center. David’s research focuses on the areas of education policy, language, and equity. In particular, he is interested in policies and practices that shape the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students. In addition, he is interested in teacher preparation and leadership in diverse settings, bilingual education, English language development, and language policy in education. Prior to joining BUENO, David was the Division Administrator for English language learning at the Illinois State Board of Education. David holds a Ph.D. in Educational Policy and M.A. in Applied Linguistics, both from the University of Massachusetts.
