Two students from the Master's Degree in North American Studies participate in the seminar "Frontiers and Wastelands. Redefining the Nation in American Popular Culture"
Thanks to the Harry Levin research grant awarded by the Instituto Franklin-UAH, two students from the Instituto Franklin-UAH participated on March 28th, 2023 in the seminar "Frontiers and Wastelands. Redefining the Nation in American Popular Culture," organized through a collaboration between PopMeC, University of Southern Denmark, and the Instituto Franklin-UAH.
The recipients of the grant, Jacob Lewis and Leejay Heller, are students in the Master's program in American Studies offered by the Instituto Franklin-UAH. At the seminar they were able to demonstrate and put into practice the knowledge acquired during their studies, making relevant contributions to the main topic of the event, centered on the concept of nation and frontier in popular culture in the United States, through their presentations. Jacob Lewis intervened with his paper "Spirit of the Borderlands: the agave gold rush and its unintended consequences," in which he explored the gentrification of the region of Oaxaca, Mexico, through the commercialization of agave, and Leejay Heller presented his paper "Moving the Line: Historical Changes of Citizenship and the Border of the United States," in which he analyzed the transformations of the concept of citizenship and border throughout the history of the United States.
