Latinø Children’s Cultures
The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the way in which unaccompanied children who, for various reasons, embark on the “road to the North” aboard La Bestia from South and Central America to the United States, are represented in cinema. To this end, two films of different genres and styles that share the same plot line, the journey of this group, will be analyzed: Rebecca Cammisa’s documentary Which Way Home (2009) and the fiction film directed by Patricia Riggen Under the Same Moon (2007). This work will also try to propose some reflections in relation to the pedagogical quality of both movies. Specifically, as didactic resources that can be used in secondary and/or higher education classrooms, in order to expose the harshness of the reality of unaccompanied children who go to the United States, and also to generate critical thinking and recognition of the reality of our contemporary societies.
