4th Camino Real Award Ceremony to Antonio Banderas
On April, 26th 2017 at 12 a.m., Mr. Antonio Banderas will receive the IV Camino Real Award, the ceremony will be held at the Paraninfo of the Universidad de Alcalá.
In the 4th edition of the Award, the selection committee has decided to award Mr. Antonio Banderas for being a highly distinguished Spanish figure within the artistic American framework that has portrayed cultural manifestations and elements of integration and tolerance. He has lead a generation of Spanish actors of international projection and careers that are recognized within different artistically and film frameworks. Mr. Antonio Banderas is furthermore a referent of the Spanish values, conserving the Spanish legacy with fervor and remaining faithful to his roots.

The “Camino Real” Award was established by Instituto Franklin-UAH in 2012, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of its creation in 1987 and as a current assertion and acknowledgement of the Spanish historical presence in the United States since Ponce de León’s arrival to Florida in 1513.
Aim: to acknowledge the professional work of the Spaniards that positively projects and enhances the image of Spain in the US.

In this fourth edition, the Camino Real Award will be granted to the Spanish actor, director, scriptwriter and producer Mr. Antonio José Domínguez Bandera. Antonio Banderas made his breakthrough in the American movie industry as an actor in 1992 in The Mambo Kings, and as a director with Crazy in Alabama, in 1999. He is the first Spanish actor nominated to a Golden Globe, the Tony Awards and to an Emmy Award. He has appeared in over 80 Spanish and American movies. Banderas founded his own film production company in 2003, Green Moon Productions, one of the leading producers in Spain, which has a significant presence in national and international festivals.
He received numerous national and international Film Awards, and is the youngest person to having received an Honorary Goya Award by the Academia de Cine de España. Moreover, Banderas received the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts in 2008, for remaining faithful to his roots, as a person and as an artist. He has also been designated Hijo Predilecto de Andalucía and Caballero Legionario de Honor.
On February 1st 2017, the Advisory Board at Instituto Franklin-UAH decided unanimously, at the first vote, to grant the IV Camino Real to Mr. Antonio Banderas. This decision was later ratified, unanimously, by the Institute’s Academic Board during their ordinary session on March, 13th 2017. Equal to the last three editions, Mr Plácido Domingo (2012), Dr. Valentín Fuster (2013) and Mr. Pau Gasol (2015), it was suggested His Majesty the King Felipe VI handed the award to Antonio Banderas.
The Advisory Board, when granting the Award, highlighted that “Mr. Banderas is a highly distinguished Spanish figure within the artistic American framework that has portrayed cultural manifestations and elements of integration and tolerance. In this edition, the sculpture of the bell, a representation of the bells that marked the Camino Real, which the award winners receive will be designed by the Navarran sculptor Carlos Ciriza.
