North America as a Multicultural Mosaic
The term “multiculturalism” has been part of the human sciences terminology over the last fifty years. Although there have been significant variations in the way the word has been used by both supporters and critics in the United States, at present scholars, politicians and artists still continue to invest in its meaning. Among other usages, multiculturalism has been discussed as a demographic and political reality, as a philosophy governing relations among groups of people, as a positive message about diversity and social practice, as the policies and programs that account for multiple expressions of identity, or as aesthetic expression. In this 3rd meeting of the Network, we intend to explore the contemporary and historical multicultural reality of the United States and to probe into the theoretical discussion of multiculturalism in the field of American Studies. Proposals by doctoral candidates in the following areas or any other related to the topic of the Seminar are welcomed:
