Photographic Exhibition "Chicano Murals in the Southwest of the United States (1972-2000)"
This photographic exhibition consisted of 27 photographs of chicano murals taken by Annick Tréguer between 1986 and 2000, in Mexican-American/Chicano neighborhoods in Southwest of the united States. The origin of these murals date back to the times of the Civil Rights Movement, at which following the example of the black communities led by Martin Luther King, Chicanos began to openly express their pride in being different from a white and homogenizing nation. Therefore many artists, mostly of Mexican origin, decided to spread through the neighborhoods, messages of the Chicano Movement and translate them into visual language through images on murals. This exhibition sought to preserve that memory through photography.
Annick Tréguer belongs to the Department of Iberian and Latin American Studies at the Université de Paris III (Sorbonne-Nouvelle). This exhibition features more than 2000 photos of Chicano murals from cities in California, Arizona, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico. Annick continues shooting Chicano murals so that the claims and spirit of the Chicano movement do not fall into oblivion.
