The Instituto Franklin-UAH celebrates its III Thanksgiving Breakfast with the participation of Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría and José Antonio Gonzalo Angulo
On November 28th, 2024, on the occasion of Thanksgiving Day, Instituto Franklin-UAH hosted the III Thanksgiving Breakfast at the Hostería del Estudiante in Alcalá de Henares, with the participation of Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, partner at Cuatrecasas, and José Antonio Gonzalo Angulo, Professor of Financial Economics and Accounting at the Universidad de Alcalá.
The event was welcomed by Ana Lariño Ares, Director of Research and External Affairs at the Instituto Franklin-UAH, and the president of the Universidad de Alcalá, José Vicente Saz. After the welcoming remarks, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría and José Antonio Gonzalo Angulo discussed the “Post-electoral Panorama of the United States: Economic and Geopolitical Perspectives.” During the colloquium, they discussed the factors that have influenced the results of the US presidential election and how Europe and Spain may be affected by the possible changes in economic and foreign policy of the new Trump Administration. The breakfast concluded with words of gratitude from José Antonio Gurpegui, Director of the Instituto Franklin-UAH.
This III Thanksgiving Breakfast was attended by the Mayor of the City of Alcalá de Henares, Judith Piquet, various members of the City Council, the President of the Social Council of the Universidad de Alcalá, Carlos Mayor Oreja, several members of the board of AEDHE (Association of Entrepreneurs of Henares), and entrepreneurs from major companies in the Corredor del Henares, among others.
The Franklin Breakfasts aim to promote constructive dialogue and exchange of ideas between the academic and business community, bringing the Instituto Franklin-UAH closer to society and to companies in the Corredor del Henares. The first breakfast took place on November 29th, 2019 with the participation of Antonio Vázquez, former President of International Airlines Group (IAG), the group that owns the airlines Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus and Vueling. The second breakfast was held on November 29th, 2023 with a conversation between José Ignacio Goirigolzarri, President of CaixaBank and member of the Advisory Board of the Instituto Franklin-UAH, and María Sarabia, Professor of Business Organization and Vice Dean of Institutional Relations and Coordination at the Universidad de Alcalá. In this third edition, the Instituto has paid tribute to the historical Spanish presence in the United States, highlighting the possibility of the Spanish origin of Thanksgiving Day and naming the tables after the places where the missions of the historic Camino Real of California settled.
Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría
Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría is Deputy to the President and partner member of the board of Directors of Cuatrecasas. She is also an elected member of the Council of State and a member of the board of Directors of CEPSA. She has been Vicepresident of the Government and Minister of the Presidency between 2011 and 2018, as well as Minister for Territorial Administrations from 2016 to 2018. She was also spokesperson for the Government between 2011 and 2016.
She holds a Law degree and is a State lawyer on leave of absence.
José Antonio Gonzalo Angulo
José Antonio Gonzalo Angulo is Professor of Financial Economics and Accounting at the Universidad Alcalá. He holds a degree and PhD in Economics and Business Administration from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Extraordinary Prize). He is a member of the Official Register of Statutory Auditors, former President of the The Accounting and Auditing Institute (ICAC), and President of the European Association of University Professors of Accounting between 2003 and 2004. He was a member of the board of Directors of the Instituto de Censores Jurados de Cuentas de España and academic advisor to the European Banking Authority (EBA). Vicepresident for Economic Affairs from 1986 to 2001.
