59% of Spaniards believe that Kamala Harris will be the next president of the United States, according to the latest report from the Instituto Franklin-UAH
This morning, the Instituto Franklin of the Universidad de Alcalá published the “III Annual Report on the Image of the United States in Spain 2024: Special US Presidential Elections,” a study carried out every year in order to measure the perception of the North American country among Spanish society in different areas. Coinciding with the election year in the United States, this third report analyzes the level of acceptance of the presidential candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, and the potential benefits of their respective victories at the polls.
The “III Annual Report on the Image of the United States in Spain 2024: Special US Presidential Elections” has been directed by the Director of the Instituto Franklin-UAH and Professor of American Studies, José Antonio Gurpegui, and gathers a sample of data obtained through more than 1000 surveys carried out between September 4th and 16th, 2024 by the company Ipsos.
57% OF SPANIARDS CONSIDER THAT THE IMAGE THEY HAVE OF THE UNITED STATES HAS DECLINED COMPARED TO PREVIOUS YEARS
The perception of the United States in Spain has worsened in 2024 compared to previous years: 57% of those surveyed indicated that the image they have of the United States has deteriorated, a notable aspect when compared to the data from the 2022 report, in which 67% of Spaniards stated that they had a favorable or very favorable image of the US country.
68% OF SPANIARDS BELIEVE THAT THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION'S MANAGEMENT OF THE CONFLICT WITH HAMAS HAS BEEN INADEQUATE
Spaniards are critical of the Biden Administration in general, especially in the handling of international affairs. 68% of respondents consider the US position in the conflict between Israel and Hamas to be inadequate, 51% define the US intervention in the war between Russia and Ukraine as inadequate, and 47% give a negative evaluation of Biden's handling of immigration.
59% OF SPANIARDS THINK THAT KAMALA HARRIS IS MORE LIKELY TO WIN AT THE POLLS
6 out of 10 Spaniards (59%) believe that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris is currently the most likely candidate to win the next US presidential election, with the exception of Vox voters, among whom 57% consider former President Donald Trump to have the best chance of winning.
75% OF SPANIARDS BELIEVE THAT KAMALA HARRIS’ VICTORY WOULD BE BETTER FOR SPAIN THAN TRUMP’S VICTORY
More than 7 out of 10 respondents (75%) believe that an administration led by Harris would be better for Spain, while only 15% consider Donald Trump's option as the best for Spain's interests. Among those who favor Harris, 45% believe that a Harris victory would improve diplomatic relations.
57% OF SPANIARDS BELIEVE THAT THEIR IMAGE OF THE UNITED STATES WOULD IMPROVE IF HARRIS WERE TO WIN THE ELECTION
57% of Spaniards believe that their image of the United States would improve if Kamala Harris were to win the presidential election, while 60% believe that their perception of the country would worsen if the winner were former President Donald Trump. In the case of women, the difference in these percentages is more drastic: 66% of the women surveyed would have a better image of the United States if Vice-President Kamala Harris were to win, compared to 16% who say that their image would improve if former President Donald Trump were to win.
56% OF SPANIARDS DO NOT TRUST THE UNITED STATES TO DEAL RESPONSIBLY WITH THE WORLD'S PROBLEMS
The European Union remains the most trusted organization by Spaniards, with 53% of respondents seeing it as capable of dealing with the world's problems with little variation in recent years. However, 56% of Spaniards do not trust the United States to deal responsibly with the world's problems.
