The Director of the Instituto Franklin-UAH participates in the presentation of the book "Y Bernardo de Gálvez entró en Washington" from the Emily Dickinson Collection
On May 8th, 2024, the Ateneo de Madrid organized the presentation of the book Y Bernardo de Gálvez entró en Washington, written by Paco Reyero and published in the Emily Dickinson Collection of the Instituto Franklin-UAH.
The event featured welcoming words from Inés de Alvear, Second Secretary of the Ateneo de Madrid. After these words, José Antonio Gurpegui, Director of the Instituto Franklin-UAH, spoke of the relevance of this book for the Instituto. Subsequently, the author of the book Paco Reyero and the journalist Guillermo Fesser carried out an analysis of the figure of Bernardo de Gálvez and his importance as an ally of George Washington in the United States War of Independence.
The book, published in 2023 in the Emily Dickinson Collection of the Instituto Franklin-UAH, tells how Bernardo de Gálvez, “The Little Known Hero” (Macharaviaya, Málaga, 1746-Tacubaya, Mexico, 1786), has finally been praised by American institutions after more than two centuries of oblivion. An achievement due to the push of researchers and committed citizens on both sides of the Atlantic. The then-Governor of Louisiana, whom General George Washington recognized as playing a decisive role in helping his army win the War of Independence, is the most recent Honorary Citizen of the United States. A privilege enjoyed by only eight names, including Sir Winston Churchill and the Marquis de Lafayette. For more information about this publication, click here.
