Instituto Franklin-UAH organized an online event to celebrate International Women's Day 2023
In order to commemorate International Women's Day, Instituto Franklin-UAH, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and Universidad de Valladolid organized on Monday March 13th 2023 an online event. Since 2020, Instituto Franklin-UAH has organized a series of events to celebrate International Women's Day, focusing on exploring different representations of feminisms, art, poetry, and translations by women.
This fourth edition was inaugurated by Dr. Luisa Juárez Hervás, professor at Universidad de Alcalá and researcher at Instituto Franklin-UAH, and featured writer and translator Gloria Fortún in a discussion with Dr. Laura Álvarez Trigo, associate professor at UCM and UVa. The debate analized the role of women authors and their (lack of) visibility in literature throughout history, with mentions of the rigidness of the literary canon, and proposed alternatives that include new perspectives on gender, race, and other marginalized collectives. In addition, the personal and professional trayectory of Gloria Fortún were explored, focusing on her experiences as a teacher, poet, translator, and feminist activist. Afterwards, the event continued with a poetry reading of North American women authors performed by students.
The event was followed virtually through Zoom by about 30 people.
